Poyais explained

What Is Poyais?

Poyais is the legendary fictional country promoted in the 1820s by Sir Gregor MacGregor. Visit Poyais reimagines that story as a modern official-style tourism, trade, residency, currency, heritage, airport, and gift-shop portal.

What Poyais was

Poyais was presented as a Central American territory of extraordinary promise: fertile soil, rivers, harbours, useful productions, civic order, and commercial opportunity. The historical reality did not match the promotional presentation, which is why Poyais remains one of the most memorable fictional countries in financial and imperial history.

Gregor MacGregor and the Cazique title

Sir Gregor MacGregor styled himself as Cazique of Poyais. The modern Visit Poyais project uses that founder mythology in a deliberately official voice: reverent, polished, confident, and carefully absurd.

Thomas Strangeways’s Sketch of the Mosquito Shore, including the Territory of Poyais described name, boundaries, climate, soil, rivers, plants, animals, agriculture, and commerce. This site treats the guidebook as the original Poyais brand manual.

Modern Visit Poyais satire project

Visit Poyais is useful by design: it explains Poyais, preserves source references, creates a complete fictional national portal, and lets the comedy come from official overconfidence. It is not a real country, government, bank, travel destination, visa authority, or investment jurisdiction.
